Shoe cabinets and storage for self assembly

Fores Habitat shoe cabinets in Israel: tilting bays 25 to 30 cm deep
A shoe cabinet is the case where carcass depth matters more than anything else. In a 120 cm corridor, an extra 20 cm of depth decides whether two people can pass each other.
Tilting compartment or shelf
| Type | What to allow for |
|---|---|
| Tilting compartment | Shoes stand at an angle, so carcass depth drops to 25 to 30 cm. The most compact option, but tall shoes and boots will not fit. |
| Ordinary shelf | 35 cm deep and more, but any pair fits, winter and high tops included. |
| Closed cupboard | Hides everything behind a door. It needs room to open, so in a narrow corridor it only works against a wall with no passage. |
How many pairs fit
Count two rows per compartment rather than going by the number of shelves: a tilting compartment takes three to four adult pairs, an ordinary shelf about the same but fewer with high shafts. In a household of four, one cabinet is almost never enough, and taking a taller carcass at the outset beats adding a second one six months later.
Shoes smell, and a closed cupboard keeps that smell inside. With solid door models it is worth leaving a compartment open at least occasionally, and shoes should not go away wet after rain. That is not a trait of any particular piece but the general story with every enclosed shoe cabinet.
