How they differ

About shelves for books
Books are heavier than anything else people usually put on a shelf. A span longer than 90 cm without an intermediate upright will sag over time, and that is a property of the material rather than a defect. Cube style units do not have the problem by design. If what you are planning is a library rather than decor, look at the width of each bay, not the overall width of the carcass.
Tall shelving must be fixed to the wall even if it stands steadily. In a home with children that is not a recommendation but a requirement: an empty unit is light, and a child climbing the shelves pulls it over onto themselves. The wall bracket is usually in the box; the plug to suit your wall is bought separately.
