Dining tables
A table is chosen to fit the room, not the catalogue. The usual mistake is the same every time: people measure the tabletop and forget the chairs around it.
How much room is actually needed
Allow about 60 cm of table length and 40 cm of depth per person. On the sides where people walk, add another 80 to 90 cm: that is what a pulled out chair takes together with the person getting up. Where the table stands against a wall, that clearance is not needed.
| Tabletop length | Seats | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| 100 to 120 cm | 4 people | The most common size for a kitchen. |
| 140 to 160 cm | 6 people | The room should be at least 280 cm wide, or the chairs will hit the wall. |
| 180 cm and above | 8 people | Usually placed in the living room rather than the kitchen. |
| Round, 90 to 110 cm | 4 people | Takes less space diagonally and has no corners. |
Extendable or fixed
Most tables in this section extend. Such models show two sizes on the product page: the regular one and a line reading «Table size when open». The second one is what matters, because it is the opened table that has to fit the room along with a walkway. The mechanism is either manual, where the top is pulled apart and a leaf is inserted, or automatic, where the leaf rises by itself as the table opens.
A fixed table is simpler and sturdier, with no seam in the middle. An extendable one suits people who host guests but sit down two or three at a time on ordinary days.
Tabletops
| Material | How it behaves in daily use |
|---|---|
| Ceramic | Unbothered by hot pans and will not scratch under a knife. The heaviest and the most expensive. |
| Tempered glass | Absorbs nothing and wipes dry. Shows every fingerprint and speck of dust. |
| Natural veneer | A genuine wood pattern. Dislikes water left standing on the seams and along the edge. |
| MDF and melamine | The calm option on price, with a wide choice of colours. The edge should be kept away from constant damp. |
Shape
A rectangular table seats more people in the same area and sits against a wall. A round one is easier for conversation, has no corners and is safer in a home with small children, but it cannot go into a corner of the room and barely grows in length. An oval is the compromise: a rounded outline in an elongated shape.
Worth checking before ordering: whether the tabletop fits through the doorway and into the lift. A fixed 160 cm top does not come apart, and that, rather than the weight, is what delivery usually trips over.
What goes with it
Chairs are in the Chairs section. If it is easier to take everything at once without matching shades, see Dining room sets. A table that works as a coffee table or console when folded is in Transforming tables. For a small kitchen there are Corner dining areas with a bench instead of chairs.
