A modern wall unit differs from an old one not in looks but in principle: it is not one carcass but a set of modules that hang and stand in any order. The practical consequence is to measure not only wall width but also the height to the ceiling and the position of sockets: hanging modules go where there is no wiring, and moving them later is awkward.

Working out the width
A gap is usually left between modules, so the sum of their widths should come out a few centimetres under the wall. Exact dimensions for each module are on its page, along with depth: hanging modules are usually shallower than floor ones, which noticeably saves walkway.
