A topper is a thin removable layer on top of the mattress. People buy one in two cases: the mattress is still sound but has gone firm or dipped on one side and it is too early to replace it; or the mattress is fine but a softer surface is wanted. A topper costs less than a new mattress and its cover comes off for washing.
