Corner dining areas in solid alder and beech, with table and chairs

A corner unit seats more people at the table than chairs do in the same area. The reason is simple: nobody needs a walkway behind someone sitting on a bench.

What you gain and what you give up

An ordinary chair needs 80 to 90 cm behind it so a person can push back and stand. A bench against the wall needs none of that, because people slide in from the side. In a kitchen with a metre left between the table and the units, that is what decides whether a dining area fits at all.

There is a flip side, and it is better known in advance. For whoever sits at the far end by the wall to get out, everyone seated after them has to stand up. In a family that becomes a habit; with frequent guests it becomes a nuisance.

What needs measuring is not the unit but the corner it goes into. A bench only works flush against two walls, and if a pipe, a radiator or a switch runs along one of them, the short side may not sit properly. Not every model can be flipped to face the other way.
