Kitchen islands in Israel: 120 and 180 cm, folding and extending counters

An island is not a piece of furniture but a rearrangement of the kitchen without building work. It adds worktop, storage and somewhere to sit, and charges metres of walkway for it.

How much clearance is needed

Leave at least 90 cm between the island and the kitchen units, and preferably a metre. Less than 90 cm means an open dishwasher or oven door blocks the passage completely. If people sit at the island on bar stools, that side needs another 90 cm for a pulled out stool. What you measure is the walkway, not the free floor area of the kitchen.

What is available

Type	What it is for
With a bar counter	The top overhangs on one side and bar stools tuck under it. It replaces a dining table in a small flat.
With a folding counter	The counter lifts only when needed. For a kitchen that cannot spare a metre permanently.
Extending	Part of the body rolls out to enlarge the surface. Closed, it takes the minimum of space.
Plain	Worktop and storage only, with no seating.

A bar counter needs a bar stool, not an ordinary chair. The counter is usually 105 to 110 cm high, which takes a stool with its seat 75 to 80 cm up: 27 to 32 cm should remain between seat and top. An ordinary chair with a 45 cm seat does not work at a counter at all.
