Fabric chairs in Israel: velvet and faux leather

An upholstered chair is chosen so that sitting at the table for an hour is possible, not just for ten minutes. There is one price for that: the covering will need cleaning.

How the coverings differ

Covering	How it behaves in daily use
Dense woven fabric	The most practical in a kitchen. It does not slip and it breathes, but it absorbs grease and smells, so it should be cleaned before the marks show, not after.
Velvet	Looks the most expensive of the three and feels good. Shows crushed pile and water marks, and suits a table with small children poorly.
Faux leather	Wipes clean with a damp cloth in a second and absorbs nothing. Warmer to sit on in summer, and a sharp object leaves a cut that never heals.

Legs

Metal legs give a slim outline and clutter the room less, but they are louder on tiles. Wooden legs are quieter and look warmer. In both cases it is worth buying floor pads straight away: floors in Israeli flats are usually tiled, and without pads chairs start scratching them within the first month.

Check whether the seat is removable. If it comes off on four screws, the upholstery can be replaced for little money and the chair gets a second life.
