A wooden chair is bought once for many years. The only thing that kills it is not wear but loose joints that nobody tightened in time.
Solid wood, veneer and board
In a chair what matters is not so much the seat surface as the frame. Solid wood means whole timber through the full thickness of the part: it can be sanded, refinished and re-glued, and a chip on a leg does not expose a different material underneath. Veneer is a thin layer of real wood over a base; it gives the same grain more cheaply, but a broken edge cannot be restored. Bare board without a wood facing is rare in chairs, because it does not carry load in thin sections.

Why chairs start to creak
Creaking is not a defect, it is physics. Wood takes on and gives off moisture, glued and bolted joints develop play over time, and the chair starts to flex under weight. The fix takes five minutes: once a year turn the chair over and tighten every bolt under the seat. Leave it for three years and the tenons work loose, and then it needs glue rather than a screwdriver. In a flat with air conditioning that dries the air, tighten more often.
Lacquer fears heat, not water. A cup set straight onto the wooden seat of a stool leaves a whitish ring that only comes out by sanding back. With a damp cloth, lacquer lives quite happily.
