Under sink filters: flow or osmosis
Two fundamentally different types of system live under a sink, and choosing between them is not a choice between worse and better but between speed and depth of filtration.
How they differ

| Flow filter | Water passes through the cartridges immediately, with no wait and no tank. Compact, and sends nothing to the drain. Removes chlorine, organics and taste, but the salts stay in the water. |
| Reverse osmosis | The membrane holds back almost everything, hardness salts included. It needs a storage tank, so it takes considerably more space under the sink, and some water goes to waste. |
What to measure before ordering
The free height and width under the sink, allowing for the trap and whatever already stands there. A flow system manages with a narrow gap at the side; osmosis with a tank needs volume. Second: there has to be somewhere on the sink or worktop for a separate tap for filtered water, and a hole through the worktop for it. If the sink is granite and there is no spare hole, drilling is a separate job worth clarifying in advance.
Osmosis does not deliver water instantly. The tank refills gradually, so if you fill a large pan in one go, the next few litres take some waiting. For a household drawing water for soup and tea back to back that is noticeable, and tank volume deserves as much attention as the filtration grade.
