In a living room a chest works less like a wardrobe and more like a working surface with storage: a television, a lamp or photographs on top, and out-of-sight things inside. That is why two questions decide the choice: how much room is left on the top, and what suits you better inside – drawers or doors.

Choosing the width
Narrow models go into a pier or a hallway, medium ones stand beside the sofa, and wide ones are often taken instead of a TV stand. If the chest sits under a screen, work the width from the television diagonal: the chest should be wider than the stand, otherwise the arrangement looks unstable.
