The choice runs on two axes at once: what is inside, and the width of the sleeping surface. Start with the filling:

The key question is not soft or firm but how the mattress supports the lower back. Lying on your back, if a hand slides under the waist the mattress is firmer than it should be. If the hips sink below the shoulders it is softer. Weight matters more than height: the same model behaves differently under 60 and under 100 kg.
Size
Single, three-quarter and double models are grouped separately. The exact size of each mattress is on its page: match it to the bed frame rather than to the room. For a child room there are children mattresses.
When a full replacement is premature
If the mattress is still sound but has gone firm, a topper changes the surface. It costs less than a new mattress and its cover comes off for washing.
