Coffee tables: glass, wood and ceramic
A coffee table is chosen by two numbers: its height relative to the sofa and its distance from it. Material and shape are a matter of taste; those two numbers decide whether the table is actually usable.

Height: level with the seat or slightly below
The top should sit level with the sofa seat or 2 to 5 cm below it. If the table is higher than the seat, setting a cup down becomes an upward motion, and that grates every single time. Much lower, and you have to reach down for it. Measuring your own sofa seat from the floor with a tape is enough.
Distance and length
Leave 40 to 45 cm between the edge of the sofa and the table. Less, and you cannot walk past without catching your knees. More, and you cannot reach the table while seated. Take the length at roughly two thirds of the sofa: a shorter table looks accidental, a longer one blocks the walkway.

Top material

About storage. More than a third of the tables here have either a drawer or a lower shelf. That solves an everyday problem people usually notice too late: remotes, chargers and glasses in a living room end up on the coffee table, and without a drawer they stay on show. If the table is going into the room where you watch television, a shelf under the top pays for itself immediately.
Tables on castors
Some models come on wheels. They suit places where the table gets in the way: there is little room in front of the sofa and it has to be rolled aside when guests arrive or the floor is being cleaned. Castors with a lock stay put; without one the table rolls at the slightest nudge, and on tiles that is more noticeable than on a rug.
