A table and its chairs are almost always bought separately and at different times. For them to match later, there is one number worth knowing in advance.

Chair height against table height
Between the seat and the underside of the tabletop there should be 27 to 32 cm. Less than that and knees hit the frame, more and you have to reach for your plate. A dining table is made about 75 cm high, so it takes a chair with a 45 cm seat. A bar counter 105 to 110 cm high needs a stool with a seat 75 to 80 cm up, and an ordinary chair will not do.

If one room is used both for eating and for working, an extendable table usually beats adding a second desk. Open, it hosts guests; closed, it leaves the walkway free, whereas a desk occupies its space permanently.
