A nightstand is chosen by height rather than looks: the top should sit roughly level with the mattress, otherwise reaching from the bed is awkward.

The opening side matters more than it seems. If the nightstand stands against a wall or the bed, the door has to open into free space, otherwise you walk round the bed every time. That is why nightstands are often bought as a pair: one left-opening, one right.
What to choose
