Two measurements decide it. Width: the stand should be wider than the television base, otherwise the arrangement looks unstable, and with a wall mount the screen appears to overhang the furniture. Height: the centre of the screen sits comfortably at seated eye level, roughly 100 to 110 cm from the floor, so a low sofa calls for a lower stand.

Most models combine a closed section for set-top boxes and cables with an open niche for anything that needs ventilation or a clear line to the remote. With a lot of equipment, look at the number of compartments rather than the total length: a long stand with one bay holds less than a short one with three.
