A living room is almost always built around one wall, and everything else is arranged with what is left.
Where to start
First decide what goes on the main wall: a full wall unit, a TV stand with shelves, or a display cabinet. That is the largest piece and it sets how much length remains for everything else. Measure the wall corner to corner rather than by the furniture standing there now, and mark the sockets separately: behind a wall unit they become unreachable, and the television and set top box need power.
Sections
| Section | What is inside |
|---|---|
| Modern wall units | The largest section. Ready compositions for a wall in a contemporary style. |
| Display cabinets | Glazed, hanging and floor standing, corner units, with lighting. |
| Chests of drawers | Drawers instead of shelves, under a window or in an alcove. |
| TV stands | Separate from a wall unit, when the wall is taken or you want the minimum. |
| Coffee tables | Low tables for the sofa and side tables. |
| Shelves | Wall shelves and bookcases. |
| Classic wall units | Compositions in a classic style, with solid wood and patina. |
| Wall units with fireplaces | With an electric or bioethanol fire built in. |
| Consoles | Narrow tables along a wall, behind a sofa or in a walkway. |
Television height matters more than people expect. The centre of the screen should fall at roughly the eye level of a seated person, which is about 100 to 110 cm from the floor. A 50 cm stand plus a television on its foot usually lands in that range, whereas a set hung above a tall chest ends up too high, and after an hour of watching your neck notices.
What is nearby
Sofas and armchairs are in Upholstered furniture. If what you want is not a ready wall unit but an assembly of separate modules from one collection to suit your own wall, see Modular wall units.
