Bookcase

Bookcases in Israel: open and with doors

An open unit keeps the room light; a glazed one keeps the books free of dust. The choice usually comes down to exactly that.

Models by MEBLE WJ, FORES HABITAT, KURATOR, MEBIN and Israeli makers. A matching desk can be found in Writing desks.

Books are heavier than they look: a running metre of a tightly packed shelf weighs some 25 to 30 kg. So with a bookcase the thing to look at is not volume but shelf thickness and the span between supports – a long thin shelf sags in the middle over time.

Type	What it gives	What to keep in mind
Open shelving	Books within reach, the room does not look crowded.	Dust settles and spines fade in the sun.
With glass doors	Books stay visible but protected.	Costs more, and the glass needs wiping.
With solid doors	Anything can go behind the front, not only books.	Contents are hidden, so you need memory or labels.
