What the section holds
| Type | What is particular about it |
|---|---|
| With a hard seat | All wood. Simpler to look after and easy to wash down, but firmer to sit on. |
| With an upholstered seat | A wooden frame with a padded seat. Such models also appear in Fabric chairs. |
| With armrests | Placed at the head of the table or used as a working chair. Check that a chair like this slides under the tabletop. |
| Stools | No backrest, they tuck fully under the table and take up no room. |
Why chairs start to creak
Creaking is not a defect, it is physics. Wood takes on and gives off moisture, glued and bolted joints develop play over time, and the chair starts to flex under weight. The fix takes five minutes: once a year turn the chair over and tighten every bolt under the seat. Leave it for three years and the tenons work loose, and then it needs glue rather than a screwdriver. In a flat with air conditioning that dries the air, tighten more often.
Lacquer fears heat, not water. A cup set straight onto the wooden seat of a stool leaves a whitish ring that only comes out by sanding back. With a damp cloth, lacquer lives quite happily.
