A console solves the problem of depth: where an ordinary table or cabinet would eat the walkway, a narrow 30 to 40 cm carcass stays out of the way.
Where a console works

A mirror above the console
Leave 20 to 25 cm between the top and the bottom edge of the mirror. Hung any lower, the mirror reflects the console and what is on it rather than the person. And check which way the front door swings: if it opens inwards, a metre of wall behind it is taken and no console will go there.
A narrow console is unstable by nature: shallow in depth and as tall as a table. If there are children or a dog in the house, a piece like this deserves screwing to the wall, just like tall shelving. It does not topple from a nudge to the top but from somebody leaning on the edge.
