The choice in this subsection is small and consists of a few living room pieces. On the other hand, the two rules that matter are simple and can be checked with a tape.
TV stand height
The centre of the screen should fall at roughly the eye level of a seated person, that is 100 to 110 cm from the floor. A stand about 50 cm high plus a television on its own foot usually lands in that range. A 70 cm stand lifts the screen too high, and after an hour of watching your neck notices. In width, the stand should be no narrower than the television.
Coffee table height
The top sits level with the sofa seat or 2 to 5 cm below it. Above seat level is awkward: setting down a cup becomes an upward motion. Leave 40 to 45 cm between the edge of the sofa and the table to walk past.
Check whether the stand has a cable cut-out in its back panel. Without one the leads run over the back, the stand will not sit flush to the wall and the room loses 3 to 5 cm of depth. A photograph of the back usually shows it.
