| Part | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Seat height | Essential. Set so that your feet rest flat on the floor and your knees sit at roughly a right angle. |
| Backrest tilt | A tilt mechanism lets the back change position through the day. Sitting all day in one posture is worse than sitting in an imperfect one. |
| Headrest | Needed by people who lean back during calls and reading. When working upright it barely comes into use. |
| Armrests | Take the load off the shoulders. What matters is that a chair with armrests slides under your particular desk. |
Mesh or fabric
In the Israeli climate this is not a matter of taste. A mesh back lets air through and your back stays dry by the end of the day; a padded fabric back feels nicer and warmer, but in a room without air conditioning the difference shows quickly in summer. The seat itself is almost always padded either way, because mesh sags under body weight.
About height adjustment. The right height is set by the desk, not by the person. First raise the chair until your forearms rest easily on the desktop, and only then look at your feet. If they are dangling, what you need is a footrest, not a lower chair: a chair set too low will have you raising your shoulders all day.
