How to Measure a Room Before Buying Furniture

Checklist for ordering furniture online without delivery and assembly surprises

Before buying furniture online, measure not only the free wall but also the entire route to the room: entrance door, elevator, stairs, corridor, turns and assembly space. Inside the room, check ceiling height, baseboard, outlets, window, radiator, passages and door or drawer opening area. This makes it easier to choose a wardrobe, bed or modular furniture without risking it blocking a passage or failing to fit through delivery.

Tip
Key Rule
Furniture in the catalog is measured by the cabinet only. In a real room, additional centimeters are needed for door opening, drawer pulling and passage. Without these measurements, even a correctly sized wardrobe may not fit.

1. Draw a Simple Room Plan

No professional drawing is needed. A hand-drawn sketch is enough: walls, door, window, outlets, air conditioner, radiator, existing bed or wardrobe. Mark where the new furniture should go and where people will walk daily.

1
Wall width
Measure at the floor, middle and near the ceiling — walls often differ.
2
Ceiling height
Especially important for wardrobes and tall modules.
3
Place depth
Account for baseboard, handles, facades and doors.
4
Free passage
Check the distance after furniture installation.

2. Check the Opening Space

The size in the catalog is only the cabinet. In a real room, extra centimeters are needed for movement: wardrobe swing doors, pull-out drawers, bed lift mechanism, sofa unfolding or cabinet opening.

Шаг
For swing-door wardrobe, check the door opening radius.
Шаг
For drawers, check if they can be fully extended.
Шаг
For storage bed, check side or front access.
Шаг
For modular wall, check it does not block outlets and cables.
Warning
This is especially important in Israel
Many apartments are in buildings with small elevators, narrow stairs and sharp turns in the stairwell. Even disassembled furniture consists of long panels, facades, mirrors and countertops that must fit through the route to the room.

3. Measure the Delivery Route

Before ordering, check the route from the street to the room:

Шаг
Building and apartment entrance door
Шаг
Elevator or stair width, height and depth
↪️
Stair and corridor turns
Шаг
Floor and manual lifting possibility
Шаг
Space where the assembler can spread out parts

4. What to Photograph

If in doubt, take photos of the installation site and delivery route. Useful shots:

  • Wall, room corner and door opening;
  • Elevator, stair turn;
  • Outlets, switches, radiator and air conditioner;
  • Masking tape on the floor with future furniture dimensions.

Photos help quickly determine if the chosen wardrobe, bed or modular system is suitable.

Send photos to the DigiMarket manager when ordering — they will check if the chosen size fits and advise if anything does not match. It is free and takes a couple of minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the wall, ceiling height, passage width, door openings, elevator or stairs, assembly space and door or drawer opening area. In Israel it is especially important to check the elevator, stair turns and apartment entrance, because large panels may not fit through the route.

Measure the wall width in three points: near the floor, in the middle and near the ceiling. If values differ, use the smaller size and leave a margin. Also check the baseboard, outlets, switches, window, radiator and air conditioner.

For daily passage near a bed, wardrobe or chest of drawers, it is usually recommended to leave about 60 cm or more. If there are swing doors, drawers or a lift mechanism, measure not only the item itself but also the space needed for opening.

Yes. Measure the width and height of the elevator door, the depth of the cabin and the diagonal of the entrance. Even if the furniture arrives disassembled, long side panels, facades, mirror doors or countertops must fit through the elevator or stairs.

Before ordering, clarify the delivery route: floor, presence of a freight elevator, stair width, turns and possibility of manual or crane lifting. Do not rely on an on-site solution: additional lifts may require separate inspection and payment.

For case goods, it is better to leave a small technical margin in width, depth and height, especially if walls are uneven or there is a baseboard. The exact margin depends on the model, but choosing furniture flush against the wall or ceiling is risky.
