Membranes for reverse osmosis systems
The membrane is the one part of an osmosis system that actually performs the osmosis. Everything else in the system exists so that it lasts longer.
How a membrane differs from a cartridge
A cartridge traps impurities inside itself and eventually clogs. A membrane accumulates nothing: it passes water through and sends everything else to the drain. That is why it lasts several times longer than the pre-filters and does not need changing with them. The usual pattern is that pre-filters are replaced several times before the membrane comes due.
When to replace it
| Sign | What it means |
|---|---|
| The tank fills more slowly | The earliest sign. Membrane output falls off gradually. |
| Taste or sediment is back | The membrane has stopped holding back salts. |
| Pre-filters were changed late | Chlorine from the mains destroys the membrane. If the pre-filters ran past their life, its own life was shortened. |
Membranes are not universal. RO-50S, Pro 50 and Pro 100 do not substitute for one another, and RO-31 takes its own. Before ordering, check the marking on the membrane you removed rather than the system name: the same model has been built in different versions over the years.
