Chairs for schoolchildren in Israel: height adjustment and mesh backs

A child doing homework sits for longer than an adult at dinner, and grows faster than the furniture wears out. So what matters here is not the price or the colour but the range of adjustment.

A rule you can check in a minute

Sit the child on the chair at their own desk and look at three points. The feet rest flat on the floor, neither dangling nor up on the toes. The knees are bent at roughly a right angle. The elbows rest easily on the desktop with no raised shoulders. If all three hold, the height is right. If the feet dangle while the elbows sit correctly, what is needed is a footrest, not a lower chair.

What to look for on the product page

FeatureWhy it matters
Height adjustmentThe main thing you are paying for here. A child outgrows a fixed height within a year or two.
BackrestA schoolchild needs lumbar support just as much as an adult does. A back up to the shoulder blades is enough; a headrest is not required for homework.
Mesh backMore important in the Israeli climate than it sounds: the child sits down after school, at the hottest hour of the day.
CastorsConvenient, but on smooth tiles a child starts rolling about instead of working. Some models come without them.

About buying one to grow into. An adult chair fails a child not on height but on seat depth. If the seat is deeper than the child thigh, they either perch on the edge with no back support or slide forward. Height can be lowered; depth cannot. Check the seat depth on the product page, it is given in centimetres.
